Umlawan Cave

The Umlawan Cave situated in the unacknowledged hamlet of Lumshnong village in West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, is the longest and the deepest cave in the sub-continent. The entrance of Umlawan Caves is located in the center of Lumshnong village. The villagers use it as a washing place. During the monsoons, the entrance is flooded with water, and one has to swim to get inside it.  The cave has 24 entrances, both horizontal and vertical, and no part of the cave is more than one hour away from the nearest entrance. This cave is connected with  two other caves namely Kot-Sati and Umskor. Total length of these caves is more than 21 km and about 100 m in depth. Dotted across the entire district there are numerous other caves and caverns embellished with spectacular stalagmites and stalactite formations. It is one of the most famous caves in Meghalaya and a necessary place to visit near Jowai.
