Williamnagar

Williamnagar, located 244 Kms from Shillong, has been formed around the former town of Simsanggre, on the upper side of the Simsang River. Simsang River is the Headquarters of East Garo hills. It is 313 kms from Shillong via Guwahati and is 76 kms from Tura. It is a very remote area usually known for its abundance of natural beauty, being surrounded by the mountains and boasting of both water and vegetation.  The well-planned township has been named after the first Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Capt. Williamson Sangma. Williamnagar is historically important, as this was the place where   the Garos made their last major resistance to the British invasion in Garo Hills during the year 1837. The Garo tribe mainly populates the district and so, the local culture is shaped up by the Garo tradition. Williamnagar has the facilities of a modern town. This place is becoming an important center for cultural, educational and socio-economical activities. The rural people of surrounding areas are also provided with agricultural training facilities. The township has one Civil Hospital, a Veterinary Hospital, a Post Office, a Telephone Exchange and a Police Station. As Williamnagar is the district headquarters, major offices are being established here together with accommodation for the government staff serving here. The government Circuit House and the District Council Inspection Bungalow overlook the beautiful Simsang River. Bus services ply daily between the township and other places within the Garo Hills and outside. One such service connects Williamnagar to Shillong. As a planned town, it has a better layout, an advantage that older towns in Meghalaya do not have. The land is very fertile and suitable for horticultural products of various kinds. The surrounding thick jungles provide an ideal haunt for wild animals like elephants and tigers.  Domre Falls in Williamnagar offers a breathtaking and vibrant view of nature. It is a good place to chill out. Simsang Festival is a cultural event held in the month of December that calls upon the best artistes of the state. Entertainment events like the Carnival, competitions in singing and dancing, Miss Simsang Beauty Pageant, Fashion Show, Food Festival, Wine Festival are the highlights of the festival. Major highlight of the festival is the Rock Contest. Simsang Festival is organized to preserve the Simsang River and its catchment areas and to display the local agri-horti products, local talents. With such kind of festivals in the state, the tourism sector is boosted up and tourism is one such sector that can solve the problem of unemployment in the state
