Mawryngkhang Bamboo Trek

Mawryngkhang Bamboo Trek

This spectacular trek- a new and completely offbeat one -is considered one of the scariest treks in Meghalaya. It stars from a small hamlet in the East Khasi Hills called Wahkhen and consists trekking over a series of connected bamboo bridges.  The people here sustain their livelihood by cultivating broomsticks. The villagers lay out these bamboos over the mountain ridges, over broomstick farms and over the roaring Umrew River. The bamboo bridges that connect most of the trek exhibit the excellence of artisanship and invincible skill of the artisans. Some parts of the bridge are bolstered with strong roots and others hammered with nails. This trek is also called U Maw Pong Trek because there is a hole that goes to the other side. It may be stated to be a Chinese bridge built with bamboos. There are hidden waterfalls at every corner. Trekking near the waterfalls is risky during rain. This trek takes one to the legendary King of Stories of Meghalaya in Wahkhen village. U Mauryng Khang was known as the King of Stories. He fell in love with a girl from another kingdom. However another person named Mawpator had become enamoured of her. A battle ensued between the two. Mawpator was hit with such intense force that his head fell off into the deep gorge below. It is believed that one can see the head of Mawpator from the viewpoint on top.  The trek is not difficult. It is all about balancing one’s feet on the bamboo trail, which is strongly, built. Overall, the trek invigorates one’s senses and soul.
